About

This small private museum is the actual home of the Koizumi family, built in 1951 under a government housing loan, and preserved with its furniture and belongings intact. You slip off your shoes and walk through the tea room, the earth-floored kitchen with its rice cooker and ice box, the children's study and the garden, all furnished as they were in the 1950s and 60s. Seasonal displays change with the calendar, showing hina dolls in spring or New Year decorations, and an annex hosts exhibitions on Showa daily life. Run by the family's descendants and volunteers, it is intimate and moving, and a world away from the neon idea of Tokyo.
