About
Set on a slope that once belonged to the painter Ito Shinsui and later a businessman's villa, Ikegami Baien was opened by Ota City in 1978 and is now one of the best plum gardens in Tokyo. Around 370 red and white plum trees of many varieties cover the hill, blooming from early February into March, when the scent hangs in the cold air and photographers jostle for shots of the pink blossoms framed against the tea houses. There is a small Japanese garden with a pond, two tea rooms (Seiryo-an and Choshun-an) that can be rented, and paths climbing to views over the neighbourhood. Outside plum season it is quiet and shady, with irises and autumn colour.
