About

Shiba Daijingu enshrines the two deities of Ise Grand Shrine, Amaterasu and Toyouke, and in the Edo period those who could not make the long pilgrimage to Ise came here instead, earning it the nickname Kanto no O-Ise-sama. The modern concrete hall, raised on a podium above the busy street, faces Zojoji's Daimon gate with Tokyo Tower beyond. Its main festival, held over eleven days from September 11 to 21, is nicknamed the "Daradara Matsuri", the "drawn-out festival", and is famous for the ginger market (once the area's ginger fields supplied Edo) and for chigibako, small round cypress boxes painted with wisteria said to bring good luck and, if you put them in a wardrobe, more clothes. An 1805 brawl here between Edo firefighters and sumo wrestlers inspired the kabuki play "Kami no Megumi Wago no Torikumi".
