About

Legend says the shrine was founded in 1091 by Minamoto no Yoshiie, who stopped here on his way home from war in the north. It later grew in importance under the Kira clan, lords of Setagaya Castle. Tall zelkova and cedar trees shade the hill, and steps lead up from the tram crossing below. Next to the main hall sits a proper outdoor dohyo (sumo ring). During the autumn festival in mid-September, university and local wrestlers hold hono-zumo here, offertory sumo said to be among the three most famous of its kind in Edo. The rest of the year the shrine is used by morning joggers and neighbourhood families, and is barely known outside Setagaya. It is just down the road from Gotokuji, so you can visit both on one stroll.
