About

Founded by the American Episcopal missionary Channing Moore Williams, Rikkyo (St. Paul's) University moved to Ikebukuro in 1918, and its first buildings were designed by the American firm Murphy & Dana in a red-brick Collegiate Gothic style that would look at home in New England. The Main Building, later named Morris Hall, faces the main gate with its ivy-clad facade and clock, flanked by the library, the chapel and the dining hall, all designated historic buildings by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. In autumn the ivy turns red, and from late November through December the two huge Himalayan cedars in front of the Main Building are lit up as Christmas trees, a tradition that draws locals. It is a ten-minute walk from Ikebukuro's West Exit yet feels a world away from the station crowds.
