About

Myonichikan ("House of Tomorrow") was built for the progressive Jiyu Gakuen school founded by journalist couple Hani Motoko and Yoshikazu, and it is one of the few Frank Lloyd Wright buildings left in Japan after the Imperial Hotel was demolished. The prairie-style complex hugs a lawn with long, low wings; its central hall has tall windows of wooden lattice in Wright's geometric patterns, and the dining hall upstairs has his hexagonal chairs and lighting. Now an Important Cultural Property still used for weddings and concerts, it opens to visitors on most days, buy the tea ticket and you get a drink and sweet in the dining room. Across the road, the Kodo auditorium by Endo continues the style.
