At the very end of the JR Ome Line, Okutama is where Tokyo turns into deep forest, gorges and 2,000 m peaks, and this visitor center is the mountain-safety and nature hub for the area. Exhibits introduce the wildlife and geology of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, and staff provide the latest trail conditions, closures and bear-sighting information, plus maps for Mt. Mitake, Mt. Kumotori, Lake Okutama and the Hikawa Gorge riverside walk. English is spoken. It is closed on Mondays (or the following weekday after a Monday holiday) and over the New Year.
