About

Ride the JR Ome Line to its terminus and you arrive somewhere that feels nothing like Tokyo. Okutama Station opened in 1944 as Hikawa Station to serve limestone quarries and was renamed in 1971; its timber-framed, chalet-style building with a pitched roof was chosen as one of the Kanto 100 Best Stations. At 343 m above sea level, it is the highest conventional railway station in Tokyo. The building was refreshed in 2019 and its upper floor has hosted a cafe with mountain views. Outside, the Tama River gorge is a few minutes' walk away, with trailheads to Mount Mitake, Lake Okutama by bus, Nippara limestone cave and riverside onsen. The journey itself, winding up the valley through tunnels and over bridges, is part of the appeal.
