About

Hatonosu means "doves' nest". Legend says doves nested in a nearby shrine when the Edo-era timber workers' camp was here. Today it is a small Okutama village whose gorge is one of the prettiest spots in the Tama River valley. From Hatonosu Station, a five-minute walk leads to the Hatonosu Kobashi suspension bridge, high above blue-green pools and granite boulders. A riverside trail, part of the Okutama Mukashi-michi, heads upstream past the Shiromaru dam to Okutama Station, about 1.5 hours away and with hardly any crowds. The river is famous with locals for its autumn colours and as a summer cool-off spot. It is spectacular for a day trip within Tokyo.
