Nogi Shrine 乃木神社
A serene Akasaka shrine honouring General Nogi Maresuke and his wife Shizuko, beside the preserved Western-style house where they took their lives after Emperor Meiji's funeral in 1912.
About
General Nogi Maresuke, hero of the Russo-Japanese War and tutor to the future Emperor Hirohito, and his wife Shizuko committed ritual suicide (junshi) on the day of Emperor Meiji's funeral in 1912, an act that shocked and moved the nation. Nogi Shrine, built next to their home, enshrines the couple. Because of their devotion to each other it is now a hugely popular wedding venue and a place to pray for marriage, safe childbirth and family happiness. Next door, the 1902 Kyu-Nogi-tei residence and its brick stables are preserved in Nogizaka Park; the interior is opened to the public only on September 12–13 each year, though you can peer through the windows at other times. The shrine also hosts a regular antique market on its grounds. Nogizaka, and the idol group Nogizaka46, take their name from the general.
