About

The Suntory Museum of Art's motto is 'Art in Life', and its 3,000-piece collection focuses on beautiful objects that were used: Edo kiriko cut glass, Nabeshima porcelain, gold-sprinkled maki-e lacquer, Noh costumes, folding screens and Western glass by Emile Galle. Kengo Kuma designed the galleries on the third and fourth floors of Tokyo Midtown's Galleria, using white-oak flooring recycled from whisky barrels, paulownia-wood walls and washi paper screens that diffuse the light, creating one of the most refined exhibition spaces in Tokyo. There is no permanent display; four or five themed exhibitions per year draw from the collection and loans. A tea room hosts occasional tea ceremonies, and the shop is excellent for high-quality Japanese crafts.
