About

Tokyo Midtown replaced the Japan Defense Agency's old Roppongi headquarters in 2007, and its 248 m Midtown Tower, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, was Tokyo's tallest building until 2014. The complex was built around the idea of 'Japan value': washi-patterned glass, bamboo-like screens and timber lattices give the Galleria its warm feel, and the high-end shops lean toward Japanese design and craft. Behind the buildings stretch Midtown Garden and the leafy Hinokicho Park, the old garden of a feudal lord's residence, with a lawn where office workers picnic in summer. Two of Tokyo's best small museums are here: the Suntory Museum of Art inside the Galleria and Tadao Ando's 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT under its folded steel roof in the garden. From mid-November to Christmas, the lawn becomes a field of blue-white LEDs, one of the city's favourite illuminations.
