About

Since the textile wholesalers moved here after the war, the stretch of Nippori Chuo-dori east of the station has been Tokyo's fabric district. Around 90 shops line the street: huge multi-storey stores like Tomato with whole floors of cotton prints, kimono silk, denim and costume fabric, and tiny specialist shops for buttons, leather, lace, ribbons, zips and Japanese tenugui cloth. Bargain bins sell offcuts for ¥100 a metre, and staff can cut exactly the length you want. Fashion students from nearby schools, cosplayers and quilters treat it as a pilgrimage, but tourists rarely come. Even if you do not sew, a handful of Japanese-print fabric or tenugui makes a light, unusual souvenir.
