About

Masaoka Shiki, who modernised haiku and tanka, spent his last years bedridden in this modest house until his death in 1902. Destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in 1950 to the original plan, it preserves his small study, desk and the view of the garden that filled his late poems, including the hechima (sponge gourd) trellis. It is a quiet literary stop a few minutes from Uguisudani Station.
