About
Tennoji began in the late Kamakura period as a Nichiren temple and later became Tendai. In 1700 the shogunate allowed it to run tomikuji lotteries, making it one of the 'three lotteries of Edo' with Meguro Fudo and Yushima Tenjin. Its five-storey pagoda in the cemetery burned in 1957, but the seated bronze Shakyamuni of 1690, known as the Genroku Daibutsu, still sits in the open air.
