About

Nikon was founded in 1917 as Nippon Kogaku, and its museum originally opened in Shinagawa in 2015 for the company's centenary. After closing in February 2024 it moved with the headquarters to the Nikon Global Headquarters / Innovation Center in Nishi-Oi, reopening on 12 October 2024 with around 30 percent more space. Exhibits are split into a consumer zone and an industry zone: the first traces Nikon cameras from the rangefinder Nikon I (1948) through the legendary F series to the latest Z mirrorless bodies, with lenses and cutaway models showing how NIKKOR optics are built; the second covers the lithography systems used to make semiconductor chips, microscopes and measuring instruments. A theatre and themed exhibitions round it out. For photographers, it is a pilgrimage in a quiet residential district along the street still called Kogaku-dori (Optics Street).
