About

East of Oimachi station, the Higashikoji grew out of the postwar black market and has stayed defiantly small-scale: low, two-storey buildings divided into bars that seat six to ten, with red lanterns, smoky grills and hand-written menus. Classic spots serve the area's famous motsu (offal) stew, Okinawan dishes, yakitori and oden, and the crowd is factory workers, office staff and young people discovering Showa nostalgia. Some buildings have been rebuilt as the area redevelops, so the mix of old and new keeps shifting, go while the original lanes survive.
