About

Known locally as Kahaku, this is two museums in one. The Japan Gallery, in a listed 1931 building shaped like an aeroplane when seen from above, tells the natural history of the archipelago under a stained-glass dome and holds the actual taxidermied Hachiko, the Akita whose loyalty made Shibuya famous, alongside the sabre-toothed Japanese wolf. The modern Global Gallery stacks floors of dinosaur skeletons, a vast wall of taxidermy animals, early Japanese computers and a 360-degree theatre. Outside, a life-size blue whale sculpture dives towards the pavement. It is excellent for children and rainy days, and the permanent galleries are good value; blockbuster special exhibitions (dinosaurs, gems, deep sea) run several times a year and need a separate ticket.
