Denboin-dori Edo Shopfronts and Shutter Art 伝法院通り
An Edo-style shopping street crossing Nakamise near Senso-ji, with wooden facades, rooftop figures and painted shutters that appear after closing time.
About
Walk to the stretch of Denboin-dori west of Nakamise-dori and shoot along the street: the shops have Edo-period style facades with tiled roofs and wooden signs, and small figures such as the thief Nezumi Kozo sit on the rooftops. In the evening, after around 7pm when shops close, the roller shutters reveal hand-painted scenes of old Asakusa life, festivals and kabuki, turning the street into an open-air gallery. Shoot the shutters straight on for detail, or angle along the street for a lantern-lit perspective. Stay out of the way of rickshaws and do not lean on the shutters.
