About

Shimizuyu is Tokyo's ultimate locals' onsen: a remodelled family sento off the Palm shopping arcade that draws water from two private wells, an extremely rare thing inside the city. The kuro-yu (black water) is tea-coloured and silky from ancient plant matter; the kogane-yu (golden water) is cloudy, salty and rust-coloured, in an outdoor rotenburo. There is also a sauna, a women's ganbanyoku (hot-stone) area and a lounge serving beer and onsen eggs. It costs the price of a standard sento, which is why it is so loved, and busy on weekend nights.
