Nature & Hike · Hachioji (western border)

Mt. Jinba 陣馬山

A grassy, open summit at 855 m on Tokyo's western border, crowned by a white horse statue. It offers huge views of Mt. Fuji, the Tanzawa range and the Kanto plain, and it is the start of a classic ridge hike to Mt. Takao that Tokyo hikers prefer to Takao's crowded paths.

About

Jinba-san (or Jimba-san) sits on the border of Hachioji in Tokyo and Sagamihara in Kanagawa. Its broad, treeless summit is unusual for the region, with a 360° panorama: Mt. Fuji floating above Tanzawa to the south-west, the Okutama peaks to the north, and the towers of Shinjuku far to the east. A white horse sculpture marks the summit, and a few tea houses sell oden, beer and juice. Locals take the bus to Jinba Kogen-shita and climb about 1.5 hours to the top, then walk the ridge east via Mt. Kagenobu and Shiroyama, both with their own tea houses, to Mt. Takao. It is a full day of about 18 km. It is busy with seasoned hikers, but you still feel far from the city.
