About
Yakuoin is one of the three great head temples of the Chizan Shingon school in Kanto and a centre of Shugendo mountain worship. Statues of long-nosed and crow-billed tengu guard the approach, and the vivid Gongen-do hall is a Tokyo-designated cultural property. Most visitors stop here on the way up Trail 1 to the summit.
