About

The Moyai statue was a gift to Shibuya in 1980 from Niijima, one of the Izu Islands administered by Tokyo. It is carved from koga-ishi, a light, porous volcanic stone found only on Niijima and Italy's Lipari, and its name is a pun: 'moyai' in the island dialect means helping one another, and it sounds like moai, the Easter Island figures that inspired it. Niijima has hundreds of these carvings; this one, with its double face, stands at the south-west side of Shibuya Station near the bus terminal, where it has become the go-to meeting spot for locals who find Hachiko too crowded.
