About

Just over an hour from Shinjuku, the Tama River runs through a narrow, forested gorge in Ome. A riverside promenade, the Mitake Valley Walk, follows it for about 4 km between Ikusabata and Mitake stations, passing bouldering rocks, canoe slalom courses and small suspension bridges. In autumn the maples on both banks make it one of Tokyo's best koyo walks. Halfway along is Ozawa Shuzo, which has brewed Sawanoi sake since 1702. Its Sawanoi-en riverside garden sells tasting sets, sake-lees desserts and tofu dishes on terraces right above the river. The brewery runs short cellar tours (booking recommended). It is a perfect, easy nature day out that many Tokyo residents love and visitors rarely find.
