About

Most visitors never realise that the western edge of Tokyo is steep, forested mountain country. Canyons, an outdoor company with Western and Japanese guides, runs its Okutama base near Mitake Station on the JR Ome Line. The signature canyoning tours, such as Holy Canyon, kit you out in wetsuit, helmet and harness, then lead you down a mountain stream by sliding natural waterslides, abseiling waterfalls and leaping into emerald pools. Packrafting trips float the Tama River's gentler rapids in inflatable personal boats. Groups are small, safety briefings are thorough and English is native for many guides, which makes this the go-to adventure day for visitors. Trips are seasonal (roughly spring to autumn, depending on water levels and temperatures) and require some fitness and comfort in water.
