About

The Meiji Maru was built by Robert Napier and Sons in Glasgow as a lighthouse tender for the Meiji government and later carried Emperor Meiji on an inspection voyage. From 1896 it served as a moored training ship for the merchant marine school that became today's Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, where it now stands on dry land. Visitors can board the ship and see the university's maritime museum and two historic observatories on the campus.
