About
The Gyoen predates the shrine: it was a daimyo garden later owned by the Imperial Household, where Emperor Meiji had irises planted for the empress. A path leads through woods to the South Pond, a teahouse and an iris field of about 150 varieties that blooms in June, and to the Kiyomasa Well, a clear spring that is a popular 'power spot'.
