About

One of the two surviving Edo-period gardens of Tokyo's waterfront (Hama-rikyu is the famous one), Kyu-Shiba-rikyu was laid out in 1678 for the senior councillor Okubo Tadatomo. The central pond, once tidal, is stitched together with stone bridges and islands modelled on Chinese West Lake scenes, with an artificial hill to climb for a view. Because it is small and wedged between the JR tracks and the World Trade Center site, most people never notice it; locals bring lunch here, and the irises, wisteria and autumn leaves are as lovely as at the big-name gardens at a fraction of the crowd.
