About

Known to everyone simply as Yushima Tenjin, this hilltop shrine between Ueno and Ochanomizu has been the city's go-to place for academic luck since the Edo period, when it sat close to the shogunate's Confucian academy. It enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the Heian-era scholar and statesman deified as Tenjin, god of learning. From January to March the racks around the main hall overflow with thousands of ema plaques from students praying to pass entrance exams. The current gongen-zukuri shrine buildings, rebuilt in 1995 from solid Japanese cypress (hinoki), are among the finest modern wooden shrine buildings in Tokyo. About 300 plum trees, mostly white-flowered, make the Ume Matsuri (roughly February to early March) one of the city's classic early-spring outings, with stalls, performances and amazake. In November a chrysanthemum festival fills the grounds with prize blooms and figure displays.
