About

Two blocks behind Kanda Manseibashi, the old Renjakucho district escaped the air raids, and its pre-war buildings now house some of Tokyo's oldest food businesses within a minute of each other. Takemura, a 1930 three-storey wooden sweet shop designated a Tokyo historic building, is the star: sit on tatami upstairs for awa-zenzai (millet with hot red-bean paste) or the sesame-oil fried age-manju. Nearby are Isegen (monkfish hotpot, founded 1830), Botan (chicken sukiyaki over charcoal, 1897) and Kanda Matsuya soba. Office workers queue here at lunch, but few visitors realise the whole block is a living Showa-era film set in central Tokyo.
