Kairaku (Oji) かいらく
A pre-war survivor in Oji: this small ramen shop is said to date to 1935 and still serves gentle shoyu ramen, wantanmen and a well-loved moyashi soba.
Moyashi soba: ¥950
Wantanmen: ¥950
About
Kairaku sits on the ground floor of an apartment building in a residential part of Oji, a few minutes from the station, and is reputedly one of Tokyo's oldest ramen shops, founded in 1935. The ramen is the soft, nostalgic kind: a light chicken and pork soy broth, thin noodles and simple toppings. Regulars recommend the moyashi soba, topped with a thick, savoury stir-fry of bean sprouts, and the wantanmen loaded with dumplings. It is a quiet neighbourhood shop, a world away from the queue culture of central Tokyo, and pairs well with a visit to Asukayama Park or Oji Inari Shrine.
