About

The Godzilla Head on Hotel Gracery is impressive up close, but the shot photographers want is from a block away: the glowing red Kabukicho Ichibangai gate in the foreground, the narrow street packed with neon signs behind it, and the 12 m Godzilla peering over the roofline at the end of the axis. Because Godzilla sits on the 8th floor terrace of Shinjuku Toho Building, a short telephoto from the Yasukuni-dori side compresses gate, signs and monster into one dense frame. This is street photography territory: crowds, touts and taxis are part of the picture, and the energy peaks late in the evening when the signs are at full blaze.
