Joyful Minowa Shopping Street ジョイフル三の輪商店街

A 400-metre covered Showa-era arcade running alongside the Toden tram tracks from Minowabashi, full of fishmongers, croquette stands and tiny diners, still very much a neighbourhood street.

About

Joyful Minowa starts right at Minowabashi, the eastern terminus of the Tokyo Sakura Tram, and runs under a long arcade roof roughly parallel to the line. Around 100 shops sell fish, tofu, pickles, tsukudani, dried goods and side dishes, and the prices are some of the lowest in Tokyo. Many have been run by the same families for decades, and the hand-painted signs and stacked wooden crates are not a retro theme but simply what has always been there. Grab a croquette or yakitori skewer, look into the tiny family-run diners, and finish with a tram ride from Minowabashi's rose-decked platform, the tram stop and arcade together are one of the best tastes of everyday shitamachi life.
