About
Known locally as O-Tenno-sama, Susano Shrine traces its origin to 795 when two deities are said to have appeared from a glowing rock, still kept in the grounds as the Zuikoseki. A Fujizuka mound built in 1864 sits over the rock, and a stone monument carries the haiku Basho wrote when he set off from Senju on his famous journey. Old ginkgo trees and peach blossoms mark the seasons.
Highlights
- Fujizuka (miniature Mt. Fuji) built in 1864
- Zuikoseki sacred rock
- Basho's 'Oku no Hosomichi' departure haiku stone
