About

Long before the airport, Haneda was a village of fishermen and nori farmers, and Haneda Shrine has protected it for centuries. Since the airport grew next door it has become the shrine of the aviation industry: airline crews, engineers and nervous flyers come for koku anzen omamori, aviation-safety amulets, and plane-motif ema prayer plaques. In the grounds stands Haneda Fuji, a fujizuka of volcanic rock brought from Mt Fuji in the Meiji era and topped by a small Sengen shrine; climbing it was believed to earn the same merit as climbing the real mountain, and it is a designated cultural property of Ota City. The summer festival, with portable shrines shaken through the narrow lanes of old Haneda, is one of the liveliest in south Tokyo.
