About

Anamori Inari was founded on the Haneda shoreline around 1804 by farmers whose sea wall kept breaching; the name means "protect from holes". By the 1930s it was a booming pilgrimage and resort spot, but in 1945 the occupying forces cleared the whole district to expand the airfield and the shrine moved to its present site in residential Haneda. Today it is a quiet, atmospheric place: a corridor of red torii leads to the Okunomiya, a mound called Inari-yama piled with hundreds of miniature gates and fox statues, and the shrine office offers Goshinsa, sacred sand believed to draw good fortune when scattered at home or the office. Its old great torii survived on airport land and still stands by the river nearby.
