About

Railway magnate Keita Goto built this collection of tea ceramics, calligraphy, Buddhist painting and scrolls, and the museum opened in 1960 in a building by Isoya Yoshida modelled on Heian-period palace architecture. Its most famous treasures are sections of the National Treasure Illustrated Tale of Genji handscrolls and the Murasaki Shikibu Diary scrolls, which are shown only for about a week a year, usually around Golden Week, and draw long lines. The rest of the year rotates seasonal collection shows of tea bowls, mirrors and calligraphy; autumn 2026 features arabesque patterns (to Oct 12) and Muromachi-period landscapes (Oct 27 to Dec 6). The real year-round draw is the garden: a steep wooded slope above the Tama River valley with winding paths, teahouses, stone Buddhas and lanterns, glorious in autumn colour.
