About

An outpost of the Edo-Tokyo Museum, this seven-hectare open-air museum rescues buildings from across Tokyo that were threatened by redevelopment. The East Zone recreates a 1930s Shitamachi street of merchant shops, a stationery store, a soy sauce shop, a pub and the magnificent Kodakara-yu public bathhouse with its Mount Fuji mural and grand temple-style roof, which Hayao Miyazaki cited as an inspiration for the bathhouse in Spirited Away (a museum mascot by him greets visitors). The West Zone has thatched-roof Edo farmhouses where volunteers sometimes light the irori hearth, and the Center Zone holds samurai residences and modernist houses by Kunio Maekawa and others. Almost everything can be entered. Spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage make it especially lovely.
