About

The Musashino terrace drops sharply along a line of wooded cliffs, which locals in Koganei call "hake", where groundwater bubbles out of the gravel. The narrow Hake no Michi lane follows this cliff through quiet residential streets. Along it, the former home and studio of the Western-style painter Nakamura Ken'ichi is now Hake no Mori Museum and the Bijutsu-no-mori green space. It has a spring-fed pond, a shady woodland garden open free to all, and a small café. Ooka Shohei set his 1950 novel Musashino Fujin (The Lady of Musashino) along this slope. It's one of the most atmospheric remnants of old Musashino, and only locals seem to know it.
