Chidorigafuchi 千鳥ヶ淵
Tokyo's most romantic cherry-blossom scene: a 700 m path along the Imperial Palace moat under 200+ cherry trees, with rowboats gliding beneath arching branches.
Rowboat rental (30 min): ¥800
About
Part of the old Edo Castle outer moat, Chidorigafuchi turns into Tokyo's most photographed sakura spot each spring. The Chidorigafuchi Ryokudo promenade runs along the top of the moat's embankment beneath a canopy of somei-yoshino and oshima cherries, which hang almost to the water. From the boat pier you can rent a rowboat to paddle underneath, and at night the trees are lit up, reflecting on the dark water. Outside cherry season it's a pleasant, quiet moat walk connecting Kudanshita, Kitanomaru Park and the National Museum of Modern Art, with the green turrets of the Budokan nearby.
Highlights
- Canopy of 200+ cherry trees arching over the castle moat
- Rowboats under the blossoms from the Chidorigafuchi boat pier
- Night illumination during the Chiyoda Sakura Festival
- Ryokudo promenade along the old Edo Castle embankment
- Flower petals carpeting the moat in late bloom
Tips
- Boat queues during peak bloom can exceed 2 hours, arrive before the pier opens or go on a weekday.
- Walk the path one way (from Kudanshita Exit 2), during peak bloom it's one-way traffic anyway.
- After the trees peak, falling petals form a pink 'hanaikada' raft on the water, arguably even prettier.
