About

MOCHA is one of the larger, better-run cat café chains in Tokyo, and the Harajuku branch is the most convenient for visitors: one escalator ride up from Takeshita-dori's mouth, in the building with a Matsumoto Kiyoshi pharmacy downstairs. The interior is airy, with cat walkways, hammocks and windows, and the residents, Munchkins, Scottish Folds, Ragdolls and others, are introduced on name boards. You disinfect your hands, put your belongings in a locker, and pay by the 10 minutes with self-serve drinks; cat treats can be bought to win friends. Staff enforce sensible rules (no picking up cats, no waking sleeping ones, no flash), which keeps it relaxed for the animals. It's an easy, low-cost break from Harajuku crowds, especially on a rainy day.
