About

The Beer Hall Lion in Ginza 7-chome opened in 1934 on the ground floor of the headquarters of Dai-Nippon Beer, and it is the oldest beer hall still operating in Japan. The interior, designed by architect Sugawara Eizō, was meant to evoke a harvest of barley: brown tiles, pillars shaped like stylised plants, and a great glass-mosaic mural at the end of the hall showing women gathering grain. It survived the war and still holds about 280 people. Waiters carry trays of steins to long tables, and the beer is poured with practised technique. In 2022 the building was registered as a tangible cultural property.
