Bar Martha is one of the original Tokyo listening bars that inspired a worldwide trend. Behind an unmarked door off a backstreet, the long dark room centres on a wall of more than 6,000 LPs and a pair of huge vintage Tannoy GRF speakers. Staff choose the records, spanning jazz, rock, soul and singer-songwriters. Whisky is the natural drink, and the rules are clear: low voices, small groups, no photos. Some find it strict; music lovers find it sublime.
