Amazake Yokocho 甘酒横丁
Ningyocho's 400 m old-town street of tofu makers, senbei toasters, shamisen and tsuzura craftsmen, where you snack on taiyaki and warm amazake under a canopy of trees.
About
Named after an amazake (sweet rice drink) shop that stood at its entrance in the Meiji era, this lane in Nihonbashi Ningyocho remains one of central Tokyo's most authentic shitamachi shopping streets. Family businesses line both sides: Futaba tofu (sip their amazake and soy milk at the counter), Yanagiya taiyaki with its permanent queue, Bachiya shamisen makers, Iwai's handmade wicker tsuzura boxes and old senbei shops toasting crackers in the window. The tree-lined median walk leads toward Meijiza theatre, and around the corner is Suitengu. Locals do their weekend snacking here; tourists rarely make it east of Nihonbashi.
