Former Nishikawa Residence 旧西川家住宅
The 1706 home of an Omi merchant family who sold mosquito nets and tatami covers in Edo, Kyoto and Osaka for 300 years.
About
Nishikawa Riemon, trading as Daimonjiya, was one of the great merchants of Omi-Hachiman. The family ran shops in Edo, Kyoto and Osaka selling mosquito nets and tatami covers, while keeping their home here. The main house on Shinmachi-dori was built in 1706 by the third head and shows the merchant style of the area: a long earth-floored passage, a shop space at the front and living rooms behind, plus a tall storehouse. The family line ended in 1930 and the property was given to the town. It was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1983 and restored in the 1980s. It is open together with the local history museums.
