About
Biwako Kisen boats cross northern Lake Biwa in about 35 minutes to Chikubushima, a small forested island home to Hogon-ji temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine, famous for throwing clay discs through a lakeside torii. Most sailings allow about 90 minutes on the island before the return. A Nagahama port at a 10-minute walk from the station makes this an easy day trip.
Highlights
- Island temple Hogon-ji and Tsukubusuma Shrine
- Kawarake disc throwing at the lakeside torii
- Open lake views of northern Biwa
- About 90 minutes ashore
Tips
- Island entry fee 600 yen for adults (temple/shrine area)
- Winter: only two sailings daily from Nagahama
- Imazu Port on the west shore is an alternative departure
