Ōsawa House (Komatsuya) 大沢家住宅
Merchant warehouse-house of 1792, the oldest kurazukuri building in Kawagoe and in the Kanto region.
About
In 1792 a kimono-fabric merchant from Ōmi province built this house on Kawagoe's main street, in the thick-walled, clay-plastered kurazukuri style designed to resist fire. When the great fire of 1893 swept through Kawagoe, the Ōsawa house was one of the few buildings to survive. Seeing this, the town's merchants rebuilt in the same fireproof style, creating the street of black warehouse shops that makes Kawagoe famous today. The Ōsawa house is the oldest kurazukuri in Kawagoe, said to be the oldest in the Kanto region, and is an Important Cultural Property. It still operates as a shop selling folk crafts.
