About
Scala-za began as a yose variety hall in 1905 and became a cinema in 1940. Saved from closure in 2007, it is run by the NPO Playground and shows independent and arthouse films in a Showa-era auditorium tucked into a back lane near the Toki-no-Kane bell tower. Foreign films are normally screened in the original language with Japanese subtitles (look for 字幕 on the schedule, not 吹替 = dubbed); Japanese films are usually shown without English subtitles.
