Kameya (Kawagoe) 龜屋 本店
Kawagoe's long-established confectioner, founded in 1783 and a purveyor to the Kawagoe domain.
About
Kameya was founded in Kawagoe in 1783, the year of the great Asama eruption, and for generations supplied sweets to the lords of the Kawagoe domain. In 1847 the house received an honorary title from the Saga imperial palace in Kyoto, a mark of prestige for a provincial confectioner. Kawagoe was a prosperous castle and river-port town that sent goods to Edo by boat, and its sweet potatoes became famous; Kameya's sweets include imo senbei and other potato confections alongside traditional monaka. The main store stands on Nakacho, just south of the kurazukuri warehouse street, in a fireproof shop building of the kind Kawagoe merchants built after the great fire of 1893.
