About

Hara Hiroshis Umeda Sky Building (1993) is two 40-storey towers joined at the top by a floating platform, the Kuchu Teien (floating garden). Glass elevators rise to the 35th floor, then a tube-like escalator crosses the open space between the towers, a dizzying ride in itself. Above the indoor 39th-floor observatory and cafe, the rooftop Sky Walk is an open-air circular deck with a 360-degree view of Umeda, the Yodo River, Osaka Bay, the Rokko mountains and, on clear days, Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. After dark, luminous stones in the floor glow like stars (the Lumi Sky Walk), and it is one of Osaka's classic sunset and date spots. At ground level, the Takimi Koji alley recreates a Showa-era restaurant street, and there is a small wooded garden around the base.
